Homework is to be defined as subject-related assignments given by a teacher, which will require time and effort outside the regular classroom for successful completion. The purpose of homework is to provide a link between home and school, increase student achievement, expand the curriculum, and encourage student self-discipline, independence, and responsibility. Well-managed and well-designed homework can significantly increase teacher understanding of what students are learning.
Homework may be assigned Monday-Friday evenings per the teacher's discretion. Time for completing homework will vary from child to child. Typically the following time frame applies to each grade level:
K 10-20 minutes 1st 20-30 minutes 2nd 30-40 minutes 3rd 40-50 minutes 4th 50-60 minutes
Student Responsibilities
Listen carefully to all directions regarding homework. Ask questions if the assignment is not clear. Keep a notebook (agenda) record of all assignments. Have a definite time and place for study, free from interruptions, and have appropriate working materials. Begin assignments promptly and turn them in when due. Take the inititative in making up work missed for any reason. Refrain from copying other student's work; use own words in the assignment.
Parent responsibilities
Provide a suitable place for study, free from distraction. Encourage the student and offer counsel, but insist the student attempt to do own work. Participate in assignments which call for active parental involvement. Check to see that the homework assignments are completed. Express interest when their children talk about school. Talk with teachers if assignments seem to cause students continuing problems. Insist upon the proper use and care of books and materials. |
